Lords of Waterdeep (Lordowie Waterdeep) is a strategy board game set in the Forgotten Realms of Dungeons & Dragons, here in the Polish edition by Rebel. Players are the secret rulers of Waterdeep: they send agents into the city's buildings, recruit adventurers and use them to complete quests. A game lasts 8 rounds, usually about an hour.

  • 2-5 players, ages 14+, about 60 minutes
  • mechanic: worker placement
  • designers: Peter Lee and Rodney Thompson
  • Polish-language cards and rulebook

What's in the Lords of Waterdeep box

  • city game board and 5 player mats
  • 121 Intrigue, Quest and Lord cards
  • 24 building tiles
  • 133 wooden pieces: adventurer cubes, agents and score markers
  • 146 gold, victory point and control tokens
  • plastic storage insert and rulebook

How it plays: agents, quests and a hidden Lord

Each player secretly draws a Lord card. Your Lord gives bonus points for certain kinds of quests, so you know your direction from round one, while your opponents can only guess until final scoring.

On your turn you place one agent on a free building space and take its reward: adventurers, gold, Intrigue cards or new quests. Adventurers come in four types: wizards, clerics, rogues and fighters. Once you have what a quest card asks for, you complete it and score.

  • Buildings - pay gold to add a new building. Everyone can use it, but the owner gets a bonus every time someone sends an agent there.
  • Intrigue - cards played at Waterdeep Harbor that help you or slow down your rivals.
  • Mandatory quests - you hand them to opponents, who must complete them before their own quests.

Who it's for

Lords of Waterdeep is a great first worker placement game: a turn is one decision about where to place an agent, and the rules can be taught at the table in a few minutes. The depth comes over repeated plays, from reading what your opponents need and steering toward your own Lord. It shines at a full table of five, when competition for open action spaces gets tight.

Expansion: Scoundrels of Skullport

When the base game feels familiar, Scoundrels of Skullport (Szelmy z Portu Czaszek) adds a sixth player (the Grey Hands), new Lords, buildings and cards, and two modules: Skullport with a new resource, corruption, and Undermountain with bigger quests.
