The Witcher: Path of Destiny (Wiedźmin: Ścieżka Przeznaczenia) is a competitive tableau-building card game in the Polish edition by Rebel. Players take on the roles of Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer, Jaskier (Dandelion) and Vesemir and relive familiar stories from the saga, but their choices change how each story unfolds and ends. The player whose character has the greatest impact becomes the hero of the tale and wins.
- 1-5 players (with a solo mode), ages 16+, about 45-90 minutes
- mechanics: tableau building, card drafting and play
- designer: Łukasz Woźniak, art: Agata Skowronek, publishers: Go On Board and Rebel
- Polish-language cards and rulebook
What's in the Path of Destiny box
- play mat
- 5 character boards and 5 character markers
- 5 Automa character boards for the solo mode
- 169 cards and 69 story cards (three decks of 23)
- 30 wooden markers and 227 tokens
Three stories in the box
Each game is one story with its own deck, special rules and several endings:
- The Striga - the castle in Wyzima and King Foltest's cursed daughter. Lift the curse or kill her?
- The Edge of the World - a village plagued by a sylvan. The rulebook recommends it for your first game.
- The Lesser Evil - the feud between Renfri and Stregobor, which does not have to end in a massacre.
The stories differ in rules complexity, so later games introduce new elements gradually.
How it plays: symbols, chapters and destiny
A story lasts three chapters of three turns each. On a turn players draft cards from the pool in initiative order, then simultaneously play two cards from hand onto their timeline. Cards carry four kinds of symbols, and the story card shows which two are active in the current chapter.
The symbol collected by the most players becomes dominant: it awards victory points and decides which path the story takes. The other active symbol gives experience, which unlocks more of your character's abilities. Each hero also has a side quest scored at the end of the game.
Who it's for
Path of Destiny is shorter and lighter than Old World: a game fits in an hour and the rules can be taught at the table. It suits saga fans who want to relive famous scenes, and players looking for a quick card game with interaction. It works with two (with an extra symbol-counting rule) and solo against the Automa, which has a version for every story.
Deluxe edition and expansions
The deluxe edition is the same game with character miniatures and dual-layer boards. Expansions add new stories and characters: Triss & A Grain of Truth, Wild Hunt and the cooperative Legendary Monsters.
