How Heroes of Might and Magic III plays on the table
The map is built from tiles, each divided into seven hex fields. You reveal them as you explore and find mines, settlements, treasure and neutral armies. Your Main Hero has a miniature, gains experience and uses a Might and Magic deck that starts with 9 cards: statistics, abilities, spells and the hero's specialty. Every won battle and visited location grows that deck. A Secondary Hero moves on the map and fights with your units but cannot use cards.
Resource rounds, when you collect income from your town, settlements and mines, alternate with Astrologers rounds, each opening with an Astrologers Proclaim card that changes the rules for that round. Combat takes place on a separate board: units are double-sided cards, and dice plus the cards you play decide the outcome. In your town you raise buildings that let you recruit more units and learn spells in the Mage Guild.
Three factions and four game modes
The box contains Castle, with griffins and angels under Queen Catherine's banner, Dungeon, with the monsters of Nighon's underworld, and Necropolis, which raises armies from the dead. Each faction has might and magic heroes and its own town with a unique ability.
- Clash - fully competitive play for 2-3 players.
- Cooperative - 2-3 players work toward a shared goal.
- Solo campaign - a series of story-linked scenarios against opponents run by AI cards.
- Alliance - 2 vs 2 teams, available once you add an expansion with a fourth faction.
Expansions for the base game
New factions add a fourth player and 2 vs 2 play: Rampart (Bastion), Fortress (Cytadela), Inferno, Stronghold (Twierdza) and Cove (Przystań). If battles are your favourite part, Battlefield moves them onto a hex board with miniatures, and the Faction Units set adds unit miniatures for Castle, Dungeon and Necropolis.
